Small Moves @ Student Ad Summit

By February 16, 2017 Uncategorized

The Student Advertising Summit is a yearly event for students looking to break into the advertising industry. It’s made possible by a group of kick ass volunteers. They spend 6 months planning for a single day of keynote speakers, breakout sessions, portfolio reviews, and agency tours. They also land about 30 agency sponsors every year! It’s great to see everything come together and run so smoothly.

The day started with a keynote presentation by Wendy Blackshaw, the SVP of marketing and sales for the The Minnesota Super Bowl Host Committee. She walked through the process of launching the “Bold North” identity for their sponsorship efforts.

FRWD’s own Lori Shepard gave a breakout presentation on Digital Marketing 101. Her goal was to give students the info they need to crush it on their first few days working in advertising. She spoke about the various roles within agencies, how to write a brief, and how a typical project will flow through media, creative, and analytics.

We also came prepared to entertain and engage potential interns with a FRWD branded plinko board, and a bunch of client swag for prizes. Shameless brag time – it encouraged a lot of talented students to stop by and chat with us about what FRWD does and what makes us unique. Everyone that visited us dropped their business cards for a chance to win a day in the life at FRWD. They’ll be able to follow one of our brands through creative, media, and project management to understand the full picture of how our teams work together.

The afternoon keynote speaker was Chuck Porter, the partner/chairman of Crispin Porter & Bogusky. Porter inspired students with examples of imaginative work for brands like Dominos, Fruit of the Loom, and Burger King.

Students and committee members ended their long day with a much deserved happy hour including a free round of drinks courtesy of Click Talent. As a past committee member, I really appreciate their effort and congratulate them on a successful day. It was a nice change of pace to attend on behalf of FRWD and get students excited about making Small Moves Every Day.
